Traditional Acupuncture - a natural healing art
Traditional Acupuncture is one of the worlds oldest system of medicine developed over 3,000 years ago, with an estimated three million practitioners worldwide. In recent years, acupuncture has become recognised in the West for its ability to address chronic and debilitating conditions, in addition to the treatment of pain.
The main principal of Traditional Acupuncture is the treatment of the whole person including the complaint, often referred to as 'holistic'. Treating holistically helps symptoms and any underlying imbalance which may be contributing to the illness or disease.
This is achieved by balancing vital energy, known as 'Qi'. Symptoms are distress signals that indicate that vital energy is out of balance and Traditional Acupuncture addresses them by treating the underlying cause of the problem which enables the body, mind and spirit to heal itself as far as nature will allow. In this way symptoms can be alleviated and the cause of the problem identified and helped to function in harmony and achieve health and well-being, leading to a more permanent improvement in health than the treatment of the symptoms alone. |

What can it do for me?
A wide variety of people come for treatment from babies and children to the elderly, and many have found it extremely beneficial where perhaps other forms of treatment have been unsuccessful. Many people come to acupuncture for help with specific symptoms both physical and psychological, or to relieve specific pains like osteoarthritis of the knee.
The affect of acupuncture however is not simply relief from a condition but an improvement in overall well-being; increased energy and vitality, greater enjoyment of life. The ‘overall well-being’ is particularly relevant for those, while not feeling that they are classically ‘sick’, are aware that they are unwell or ‘out of sorts’. A person may benefit from treatment and the restoration of well-being without necessarily having a named ‘illness’.
As Traditional Acupuncture aims to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms in isolation, it can be affective for a range of conditions and can be used effectively alongside conventional medicines.
This approach also means that each patient's treatment plan will be different. However, you can always ask me about other patients experiences to give you an idea of what to expect. Many people return to acupuncture again and again because they find it so beneficial and relaxing.

What Conditions Does Acupuncture Help?
A growing body of evidence-based clinical research shows that Traditional Acupuncture safely treats a wide range of common health problems.
In 2009 the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence recommended that acupuncture should be made available on the NHS, as a cost effective short term treatment for the management of early, persistent non-specific lower back pain.
The British Acupuncture Council provides accurate and unbiased information for a variety of conditions. To obtain summaries of research and fact sheets for a variety of health complaints and the effectiveness of acupuncture visit http://www.acupuncture.org.uk/research-fact-sheets.html
